18 Straight Furrow • January 13, 2009 Livestock Tomlinsons top lamb fest F ROM over 60 entries in the 2008 Mint Lamb Competition, Amberley, North Canterbury, farmers Ken and Judy Tomlinson won the top title with their com- posite lamb named the coun- try’s best, from paddock to plate. Farmers nationwide were invited to showcase the qual- ity of their lamb in the com- petition which was open to all breeds. Lambs were judged on the hook at an Alliance plant for Best Overall Yield, with the best from each class (dual- purpose, dual-purpose/cross- terminal, composite/cross- bred cross-terminal and ter- minal) from the North Island and the South Island taste tested at last month’s Royal New Zealand Show in Christchurch. One hind quarter from each semi-finalist was boned out, cooked and taste tested in front of show crowds in the Food & Wine NZ Pavilion. The meat was cooked by Christchurch chef Gary Miller. Judges included celebrity chef Annabelle White, Christchurch chef and restaurant judge Shirley Bradstock, butcher Nick Putt, Duncan Bates from Akaroa Salmon and agribusiness commentator Rob Cope- Williams. All semi-finalists received a cash prize of $100, with the Tomlinsons winning a trophy, show ribbon and cash prize of $1000. Second prize of $500 and third of $300 both went to MR & RM McConachy from Featherson for their Texel. The McConachys also finished third in the competi- tion last year. The drafter of the winning lamb, Dale Henderson, received a $200 gourmet food and wine hamper for winning the drafting section of the competition. THICAL Agents has recently announced the arrival of new Fiprovet – the new flea spray treat- ment that delivers superior kill rates at significantly lower cost. Now you can afford to treat all your farm dogs (and cats). The spray delivery means new Fiprovet kills fleas using a lower level of concen- tration - 2.5% compared with spot appli- cations at 9.8%, so it is far more cost effective for each treatment. Equally, by spraying the correct quanti- ty for the size of the dog, rather than the fixed doses of the spot applications, under or over-dosing is less likely to occur, so there is minimal wastage. New hardworking flea treatment that’s easy on the pocket E Further economy is achieved because Fiprovet lasts two months on dogs means you’re spending less in the long run. And after 48 hours’ application, dogs can swim, get wet, or be shampooed @A$@A6? BC&6A? C???" % ? QR? IC& P" #C #C? QR? Dogs get quicker relief too because Fiprovet kills on contact - treating, pre- venting and controlling biting lice infesta- tions, and flea allergy dermatitis. Because it is a spray, you can also use it to dose inside kennels and bedding to keep fleas from re-infesting. One other attractive feature - it also acts as an aid in the control of ticks. The innovative spray bottle is also a huge improvement on previous products with a trigger designed to work efficiently without drips or leakage even when sprayed upside down. Now you can reach the underside of your dogs just as easily. The grip has been ergonomically designed for comfortable dispensing and the nozzle has an on-off safety twist. Greg Roberts, Ethical Agents managing director, said: “With Fiprovet, Troy Laboratories have pulled out all stops to create the next generation of flea control with huge advantages for owners of working dogs. “I believe that we now offer working dog owners a real alternative in flea treat- ment, one that lasts longer, controls ticks, is easy to use and costs less, which these days is perhaps the best reason to switch to Fiprovet of all.” Fiprovet is available only from your vet.
