30 Straight Furrow • January 13, 2009 Property NATIONALLY recognised native plant nursery on the Kapiti Coast noted for fostering rare and endangered New Zealand plants is for sale because its own- ers are retiring. Alastair Turnbull and his wife, Margaret, are selling the property, which they devel- oped over their 22 years of ownership into one of New Zealand’s finest native tree, shrub, alpine plant and fern nurseries, said marketing agent John Pike of Bayleys CD Realty. “The nursery is a spectacular showcase of specimens from all over the country, from as far north as Cape Reinga to as far Why advertise your property in Whatever the weather... Many indigenous plants are disappearing from their natural state, and Alastair devoted his life to preserving these plants and teaching others how to grow them,” Mr Pike said. “Talisman Nursery has played an impor- tant role in protecting our natural her- itage.” The business could be expanded into other profitable lines of plants, or the prop- erty could interest a buyer purely for its lifestyle aspects, Mr Pike said. Located on Ringawhati Rd in Otaki, the property is a hidden garden, approached by a long drive lined with trees, which leads first to a historic two-story brick dwelling, formerly a stable which has been convert- ed to a home-stay. Inside, the exposed brick walls, high stud ceiling and hard wood beams and panelling offer cosy accommo- dations for up to four guests. Nearby is the main dwelling, a modern- ized character home set in park-like sur- rounds. The nursery’s buildings include several work sheds, two shade houses and a glass house. Across a walkway are rows of potted grasses and low growing shrubs, surround- ed by hedges and trees, and further out meandering tracks lead through several more acres of garden and bush. The nursery was featured in the August edition of New Zealand Gardener which commented, “For native plant connois- seurs, especially those with a taste for the arty-looking, tangled divaricating species, Alastair’s nursery is a treat.” The nursery’s display gardens are popu- lar with weekenders from Wellington or Palmerston North, who like to visit Otaki, with its shops and cafes, beaches, bush walks — and the nursery. “The area being 70 kilometres from Wellington, people like to come up for the day and visit Talisman Nursery. The grounds are just beautiful. It’s like entering another world when you come in the drive with all the trees and flowering plants and bird life,” Mr Pike says. The business has generated an annual income of $60,000-$80,000, although in recent years it has been somewhat less with the owners in semi-retirement. The land and buildings have a CV of $600,000 and the plant stock will also be sold.
